Overall Job Purpose Solutions Architect – Enterprise Platforms (Data Protection/Data Management)
This position is a Solution Architecture / Pre Sales role focussed on Data Protection and Data Management. This will incorporate solutions from SCC’s partner vendors including (but not limited to) Veritas, HPE, Dell EMC and Commvault.
Typically the Solution Architect will take a leadership role in terms of complex bids, initiatives or programmes of work, ensuring that all technical resources work against an agreed service or technical outcome. This can also take the form of QA or TDA across bids or customer engagements. The delivery elements managed could also include third parties/SCC partners or indeed customer staff.
In this role there is also a strong focus on sales education, to evangelise and drive traction around data protection and data management propositions and the associated product portfolios across the SCC sales force and with customers directly. This may include running both internal and customer-facing workshops and events, and creating literature (leaflets, flyers, whitepapers, briefing documents, webinars) that can be distributed to account managers and to customers.
As well as leading engagements, the role provides the traditional SA focus of consulting with customers on a predominately pre-sales basis with the objective of understanding the customers IT challenges and service requirements. Post-sales architectural and implementation work will also be required.
The Solution Architect is also expected to contribute to the overall strategy of the services business and in some cases own “domain” responsibility. This involves being the focal point for information flow both from the market and vendors.
The Solution Architect leading the domain also has a responsibility for services creation and on-going updates for the particular area in conjunction with or under the direction of the CTO/Senior Managers of SCC Services. This could involve working with SCC Marketing and/or partners on particular initiatives.
The Solution Architect will also be expected to coach and present to other SA’s, Technical staff and Sales on key technology areas, deliver key messaging around business benefit as well as technical. This may also include customers.
Main Duties of the Job:
The Solution Architect will primarily work with the SCC sales force to qualify, propose and architect data protection/data management solutions and associated SCC services. This will also include engagement with other professional services architects or consultants on multi-discipline solutions and also work with resources across the wider SCC services business where possible to include SCC Managed Services and Data Centre Services. It is also expected that where relevant the Solution Architect may support implementation activity subject to appropriate accreditation levels although the primary responsibility will be to support pre-sales solution engagement.
The primary domain expertise of the SA will fall into a minimum of two of the seven key domains. The SA will perform a lead role for one or more of these domains, however it is important that the Solution Architect has knowledge around the other domains.
Domain 1) Datacentre Services both Remote Services and at SCC Facilities
Domain 2) Microsoft Technologies both for the Datacentre and Desktop
Domain 3) Virtualisation both for the Datacentre and Desktop
Domain 4) Collaboration/Messaging using Microsoft technologies (MOSS, Exchange, OCS)
Domain 5) Servers and/or Storage using multi-vendor or single vendor technologies, including supporting and enabling technologies
Domain 6) Technology Consulting around Infrastructure direction and options. Includes knowledge of cost models and various deployment approaches
Domain 7) Unified Communications utilising SCC and key partner components
The SA needs to demonstrate a good understanding of typical customer business and IT problems and how their domain technologies can address those business problems.
The SA should have broader knowledge than what is primarily in their Domain and should be a “trusted advisor” both to the customer and to the SCC sales force.
The SA will gather requirements from customers to then design an appropriate solution to meet these requirements. They may call upon other technical resources within the organisation, but will lead the initiative to ensure that the key elements of the solution are cohesive and that the overall proposition is compelling.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
Specific experience of data protection solutions including qualification, design and architecture is required and specifically knowledge and accreditation for Veritas NetBackup is a minimum requirement. Experience of other data protection solutions and market direction will be required in addition to a strong awareness of data management and compliance and regulatory requirements such as GDPR. Experience of cloud solutions and integration within data protection and data management is also a requirement. Relevant Industry experience in data management and data protection solutions and associated accreditations are required together with the ability to create and deliver technology solution proposals and presentations. Excellent written and presentation skills are mandatory. Must have a strong sales drive. Multiple scars and horror stories having learnt from where things have gone wrong.
